Competition age starts at 10 years for boxing”
St Catherine’s Sailing Club
“We start our Juniors from the age of 8”
Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club
“JLDSC take juniors who are already confident swimmers at 8 years old. We do not give lessons, hence why they need to be confident swimmers already. We just have fun and give confidence in the water.”
Jersey Table Tennis Association
“For the table tennis we have juniors playing who are 8 years old.”
NINE YEARS OLD (and above)
Jersey Golf Union
“We would look at juniors from around nine – we believe the clubs are doing this too.”
TEN YEARS OLD (and above)
Archers of Jersey
“At AoJ our juniors tend to be age 10 upwards, but can be flexible depending on strength and focus. They need to be accompanied by an adult at all times and often do beginners course together”
Jersey Croquet
“We welcome juniors from around the age of 10 (they need to be tall enough to handle a mallet), providing they are accompanied by an adult”
Jersey Petanque Association
“We don’t have a specific lowest age for players. We are always hopeful of attracting youngsters to the petanque which is why we have been holding sessions at both primary and secondary schools, and also taking part in the sessions which Jersey Sport organise. ”
Western Miniature Rifle Club
“I can only officially talk about Western Miniature Rifle Club in relation to your question, for 10meter air rifle it would be 10 years old and .22 rifle it’s 12 years, with a caveat on both disciplines that they are mentally mature enough and physically capable of firing a rifle. I believe most clubs in the island are running on the same lines. ”
ELEVEN YEARS OLD (but possibly younger – and above)
Jersey Archery Society
“11 years old is the guideline we work too. Not all at that age are mentally or physically ready to start Archery. Archery is often referred to as a ‘late burning’ sport and will pick up athletes that are retiring from their first sport in their mid-20’s.”
St Brelade’s Bowls Club
“We normally would introduce juniors to Bowls at around 11 years old, but we do have junior woods for 7/8 years old”
Jersey Volleyball Association
“For Volleyball we currently go from 11/12 years old and above. Essentially, secondary school to help with physicality and maturity.”
THIRTEEN YEARS OLD (but possibly younger!)
Jersey Fencing Club
“Fencing intake age is 13. Those in the 10-13 range, possibly subject to negotiation.”
Jersey Rifle Association
“We do take juniors from around the age of 13 as long as they are not too small for their age as rifles are quite unwieldy for small youngsters. All sexes are catered for. We do recommend though that the junior has shot rifle before, maybe .22 or air rifle as a fullbore rifle is not the best way for juniors to learn the basic principles of target rifle shooting. ”
Jersey Rowing Club
“We take juniors into our Youth Academy program from year 9”
Jersey Touch Association
“In terms of minimum age, it is school year 9 and up. Some 13 year olds are year 8, we do not take them. So any Year 8’s will have to wait until September.
We are doing ‘Touch for All’ every Monday evening at Les Quennevais Playing Fields from 6.45 – 8.00pm until the end of September. This is open to female and male, school year 9 and up. All abilities welcome. Free for members; £4 for non members”
