The inaugural ESF European Squash 57/ Racketball Cup took place last weekend in Sheffield.
The event attracted 180 players from all over Europe.
Ian Furness came through to win the 055 final after an epic 3-2 semi final. Not only that he went on to win the 050 Doubles. A fantastic result from a superb rackets player who has shown exemplary sportsmanship for many years.
Great that Jersey steps up on the World stage with another European Champion.
Liz Casely also competed in the Women’s 050 event, Liz played her socks off against the best female players in Europe placing a highly commendable 4th overall. A wonderful result for her in such a high level of competition.
Their achievements bode well for the game in Jersey and both are an inspiration to us all!
In the Racketball International team event held on 4-6th Sept, the Channel Islands entered an Over 70’s team comprising of Neal Pickersgill, Hugh Jones both from Jersey and Steve Falla from Guernsey. The team enjoyed a successful two days beating England Barbarians, Wales and Scotland but narrowly losing the final to England A by 2 matches to 1.

It would be great if a major European event such as this could be held in Jersey – Why not! (more courts are needed to grow the sport as a community based activity and Junior Squash development )
