The Walkers Jersey Hockey U17 Boys produced the finest performance by an Under-17 boys’ side in Jersey Hockey history, finishing runners-up at the National Counties Championships after an outstanding three-day tournament that showcased their attacking hockey, relentless work ethic and tremendous team spirit.

They made a perfect start with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cornwall. After conceding first to an excellent finish from a tight angle, Jersey responded well, with Jake Le Boutillier driving into the circle from the left to level the scores before Ollie Ferguson calmly converted a penalty flick after a foot on the line from a penalty corner. Ben Vieira was excellent at right back, repeatedly overlapping to add width and help Jersey control possession.

Momentum continued against Shropshire, who had earlier beaten Essex 5-0. Jersey set the tone from the opening whistle and were rewarded with a 4-0 win. Le Boutillier opened the scoring with a stunning reverse tomahawk, then added a second after excellent work from Kobi Helmot-Kneisel. Rufus Aston reacted quickest to a penalty corner rebound, and Le Boutillier completed his hat-trick with a deft deflection from Ed Hodgson’s injection.

Day two brought two more dominant displays. Berkshire were beaten 6-2 after Kobi Helmot-Kneisel reacted first to Hodgson’s saved shot, Le Boutillier added a penalty corner rebound and then scored twice more from open play, Hodgson got on the scoresheet and Hugo Gomersall finished with an excellent drag flick. Later, Jersey overwhelmed Essex 8-0 in arguably their most complete group-stage performance. Le Boutillier scored almost immediately, Hodgson doubled the lead, and Le Boutillier then converted a penalty flick after being taken down by the goalkeeper before adding a superb reverse-stick finish before half-time. The introduction of Rex Friggot and Lucas Macalister added fresh legs and helped maintain the tempo, and the second half followed the same pattern as Le Boutillier completed a six-goal haul, with Ben Vieira rounding off the scoring.

The final pool match brought the toughest test against a strong Hampshire side. Kobi Helmot-Kneisel gave Jersey an early lead from close range, but Hampshire fought back to lead 2-1 at half-time before extending their advantage through two expertly executed penalty corners. Jersey refused to give in and Le Boutillier reduced the deficit from a penalty corner, but Hampshire held on for a 4-2 victory. Even so, Jersey’s discipline was outstanding, with Ben Vieira, Harry Cutting, Hugo Gomersall, Harry Le Brocq and Rufus Aston forming a superbly solid defensive unit, with Will Wilson as ever a powerhouse in goal.

Awaiting them in the semi-final was a talented London side, but Jersey responded with arguably their best all-round performance of the tournament. London started strongly and took an early lead from a penalty corner, yet Jersey regrouped superbly. The tireless running of Will Smith, Ollie Ferguson, Ed Hodgson, Louis Bell and Rufus Aston in midfield gave Jersey the platform to press relentlessly and stretch London’s defence, while Gomersall’s accurate aerial passes repeatedly opened up space. Bell equalised after reacting quickest to a penalty corner save before London regained the lead. Jersey answered immediately as Le Boutillier converted from a penalty corner before Kobi finished brilliantly from a cross to put Jersey 3-2 ahead at the break. The standout moment came in the second half when Kobi collected the ball around the 23-metre line, beat several defenders, rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted home a superb solo goal to seal a memorable 4-2 victory and send Jersey into their first ever Under-17 National Counties final.

The final against Surrey proved to be a fitting conclusion to an outstanding tournament. Surrey sat deep and defended in numbers, allowing Jersey to dominate possession. Patience paid off with an early goal as Bell delivered an excellent ball into the circle for Le Boutillier to finish confidently into the bottom corner. Jersey controlled the rest of the first half but were punished just before the interval when Surrey’s only attack ended with a fortunate deflection to level the scores.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Jersey continued to dominate possession, had one penalty corner goal ruled out and remained patient in search of another breakthrough. It eventually arrived when Hodgson injected a penalty corner and Le Boutillier expertly deflected the ball over the goalkeeper to restore Jersey’s lead. Surrey rarely threatened but capitalised on one of their few opportunities, converting a penalty corner to make it 2-2. Jersey pressed relentlessly for a winner but could not find the decisive goal.

The championship was settled by shuffles. Both goalkeepers produced outstanding saves as the teams remained locked at 1-1 after five attempts each. In sudden death, Jersey were unable to convert before Surrey scored the decisive shuffle to claim the title.

Although the final ended in heartbreak, there was overwhelming pride in what this group had achieved. Jersey played exciting, high-tempo hockey throughout the championships, scoring 30 goals in eight matches and demonstrating relentless pressing, disciplined defending and exceptional teamwork. Reaching the National Counties Championship Final and finishing runners-up is the best-ever result for a Jersey Under-17 boys’ side and reflects the continued growth and development of Jersey Hockey.

A huge thank you goes to our principal sponsors, Walkers, Jersey Sports Travel Fund, the coaching and management team, and the parents and supporters whose encouragement throughout the weekend made this journey possible.

Graeme Ferguson Coach “From the first game to the final shuffle, this group demonstrated everything we ask of Jersey players – hard work, resilience, discipline and enjoyment of the game. To reach the National Counties final is a remarkable achievement, and every player contributed to that success. I couldn’t be prouder of this team and what they have accomplished together.”
