The Ayr pétanque Club hosted an open competition with a difference.
Teams of four players competed in singles, doubles and triples matches along with shooting and pointing events. As a finale to the two days of competition a game involving all four team players playing with only one boule each was played. This, to many players, was more anxiety causing and stressful than all the other games combined.
The St Breladais team of Joy and Derek Hart and Bridie and David Hunter, as the second placed team, had to play the competition’s leading team. The team from Wales! The eventual winners of the competition .
It was a close fought match but the Welsh team drew ahead and the St Breladais team, as a result, ended a creditable fourth overall. The good news is that the final positions were determined on games won and then points difference for and against. Taken on games alone the St Breladais team would have been joint second.
Not a bad result for Parish players who were up against really stiff competition from Scottish, Welsh and English teams many of whom were using it as a warm up as they are representing their homeland in the forthcoming Home Nations to be played in Stirling in August.
Although competition was fierce on the terrain off the terrain there was great camaraderie and good humour and this made it a pleasure to play in the Ayr pétanque clubs team 4 challenge.
